Kirk Geiling of Loveland, Ohio and Walter Todd of Laurens both shot 2-under-par 69s Wednesday to share the first-round lead in the Senior Azalea amateur golf tournament being played at the Country Club of Charleston. The event is for senior amateurs age 55 and older.
Kiawah Island’s Mike Weiner leads the Super Senior (age 65 and older) division, also shooting 69 for a one-shot advantage over Larry Woods of Louisville, Ky., and Pete Allen of Southport, N.C.
Geiling reeled off three consecutive birdies, starting at No. 5, but bogeyed No. 9 for a 2-under 34 on the front nine. He then finished the round with nine pars.
Todd had two birdies and one bogey on each nine.
One shot behind Geiling and Todd are Randy King of Kilgore, Texas, Os Hillman of Cumming, Ga., and Ed Donlin of Concord, N.C.
Four-time defending champion Brady Exber of Las Vegas is tied for 10th, three shots off the lead.
The tournament continues through Friday.
