COLUMBIA — South Carolina and North Carolina will renew their football series with two more upcoming games, both of them being played in Charlotte.
The Charlotte Sports Foundation announced Wednesday that the Gamecocks and Tar Heels would play again at Bank of America Stadium in 2019 and 2023, with both games taking place on Labor Day weekend. USC and UNC open the season Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Carolina Panthers’ stadium.
South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner called it “a great game for the student-athletes and fans at each school to kick off the football season.” Although this season’s game is held on a Thursday, a day of the week was not specified for the 2019 and 2023 contests.
Thursday’s game is just the third between the two former ACC foes since 1991. North Carolina leads the all-time series 34-18-4, but the Gamecocks have won five of the last six meetings between the two schools in a series that dates back to 1903.
The Charlotte Observer reported that both schools received an appearance fee of over $3 million for this season’s game. According to the newspaper, approximately 50,000 tickets had been sold in the 73,298-seat stadium, with many of the unsold seats remaining in the upper bowl.
