KIAWAH ISLAND — Led by sophomore Caleb Sturgeon and freshman Will Starke, South Carolina scored a 20-shot win over Winthrop on Tuesday in the Wendy’s Kiawah Classic men’s college golf tournament played at Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Turtle Point course.

As a team, the Gamecocks shot even-par 284 in the final round for a three-day total of 859 for the win. Jacksonville State (885) was third.

Sturgeon, from Laurens, closed with a final-round 68 for a score of 210 to win medalist honors. Starke, from Chapin, was two shots behind. Winthrop was led by former Pinewood Prep star Kamito Hirai, who tied for ninth with a score of 218.

The College of Charleston — led by Zach Munroe, who tied for third (215), and Alex Ellis, who tied for sixth place (217) — finished fourth at 890.

Charleston Southern finished 13th at 914, while Presbyterian finished 17th at 921 and USC Upstate 18th at 926.
