Matt Andress pitched the second complete game of his career as No. 7 seed Appalachian State topped No. 3 seed Georgia Southern, 6-2, in the first elimination game of the Southern Conference baseballtournament at Riley Park.
Appalachian State (36-17-1) will face the loser of the College of Charleston and Western Carolina game today at 3 p.m. Georgia Southern (34-24) was eliminated.
Andress earned the 26th victory of his career, making him the Mountaineers' all-time leader. He surrendered two earned runs on nine hits and struck out 11.
Dexter Bobo (1-2) took the loss for Georgia Southern in his first career start. He gave up three runs, one of which was earned, on three hits. The senior retired seven in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Outfielder Chris Alessandria led the Mountaineers at the plate, batting 3 for 3, bringing in two runs and scoring twice. Catcher Jerod Faggart notched two RBIs.
Designated hitter Victor Roache and third baseman A.J. Wirnsberger both hit 2 for 4 for the Eagles. Wirnsberger and outfielder Shawn Payne each notched an RBI.
