Fort Dorchester’s T.J. Smith caught three passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns as the Patriots pounded West Ashley, 49-17, Friday night.
Fort Dorchester running backs Daitwan Commodore and Charles Loftland combined for more than 175 rushing yards and five TDs as the Patriots improved to 3-3.
“Hopefully we are starting to catch our stride a little,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “Our playmakers have done well all year but I thought our offensive line also blocked well tonight. West Ashley is hard to prepare for and I thought our defense stepped it up.”
West Ashley (1-5) drove 83 yards on its first possession to score, but had trouble sustaining drives the rest of the game. That score came on a gadget play with running back Joseph Gabe taking a lateral and then passing 25 yards toDerrick Kinloch in the end zone.
Fort Dorchester answered the Wildcat score with a 35-yard scoring strike to Smith, who also scored on a 69-yard pass play in the second quarter.
The Patriots scored on a 19-yard run by Loftland in the final minute of the second quarter to take a 28-14 lead into the half. Loftland also scored twice in the second half, on runs of 1 and 39 yards. Commodore had TD runs of 13 and 20 yards in the game.
A failed fake punt attempt by West Ashley deep in its own territory and multiple failed fourth-down conversions helped the Patriots cushion their lead. West Ashley’s other TD came in the second quarter on a 1-yard run that capped a 64-yard drive.
Fort Dorchester quarterback Baptiste Staggers completed 5 of 10 passes for 121 yards.
