Charlie Brown, a Johns Island native and two-time All-Pro wide receiver for the Washington Redskins, will be holding free football camps next month. The camps are sponsored through the Brown-McCrone Foundation, A Lifetime of Giving Back.
The first camp will be held June 4-5 at Burke High School and the second is June 7-8 at St. John’s. The camps are open to youths ages 8 to rising high school seniors.
The camps will be headed by Brown and local coaches as well as coaches who are former and current NFL players.
Motivational speakers will talk with campers to stress the importance of education.
“I’ve seen a lot of talented and skilled football players,” Brown said, “but they didn’t get far on the field because they weren’t succeeding in the classroom.”
After attending St. John’s High School, Brown starred at South Carolina State and then played with the Redskins and Atlanta Falcons. Brown has taught and coached at schools in South Carolina and Georgia and coached football at the high school, college and professional levels.
