Former Citadel football standout Tyler Renew is back in the game.

Renew, the All-American fullback on two Southern Conference championship teams at The Citadel, has been hired as a coach at his high school alma mater, Ben Lippen School in Columbia.

Renew will be the head junior varsity coach and an assistant coach in charge of running backs on the varsity team.

Renew rushed for 1,096 yards and four touchdowns in 2016 as the Bulldogs went 10-2 and won a second straight SoCon title. In 2015, he ran for 839 yards and five touchdowns for a 9-4 Bulldogs team that also won a SoCon championship.

Renew earned a free agent tryout with the Atlanta Falcons before being cut by the NFL team in September 2017.

Johnson makes choice

Former Citadel basketball player Frankie Johnson will transfer to Wingate, a Division II school in Wingate, N.C.

Johnson, a 5-5 point guard, averaged 6.3 points and 3.3 rebounds for the 11-21 Bulldogs last season, leading the team with 138 assists. The rising junior will have two seasons to play at Wingate, which is coached by Brian Good and was 15-15 last season.
