Noah Hughes, a former Citadel football player and 2011 graduate of the military school, was killed in a motorcycle accident early Friday in Florida.
Hughes was 22 years old.
According to the St. Petersburg Times, Hughes was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a light pole in St. Petersburg at about 2:23 a.m. Friday. A spokesman for the St. Petersburg police department told the paper that Hughes was traveling at a high rate of speed and was not wearing a helmet.
Bulldogs coach Kevin Higgins said the news was "just devastating."
"Noah was a great kid, well-liked by all of his teammates," Higgins said Friday afternoon from Columbia. "He was a hard worker for us. He played mostly on special teams and scout teams for us, but he always gave a great effort in everything that he did."
Hughes, a linebacker, graduated from St. Petersburg Catholic High School and earned a varsity letter at The Citadel in 2010.
