Field set for next week’s PGA Championship

Tiger Woods and 155 others will enter next week’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course.

Tiger Woods will be here. So will Phil Mickelson. The list of contestants competing in the PGA Championship next week at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course includes Masters champion Bubba Watson, U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson and British Open champion Ernie Els.

There have been 15 different winners in the last 15 major championships, and all are scheduled to play at the Ocean Course.

The 156-player field will include six players from the Palmetto State — former Clemson stars Lucas Glover, Jonathan Byrd and Kyle Stanley; former Coastal Carolina standout Dustin Johnson; Greenville native and Wake Forest graduate Bill Haas; and Bishopville native Tommy Gainey.

A seventh South Carolina golfer also could make the field, depending on what happens at the two PGA Tour events this week, the Reno-Tahoe Open and the Bridgestone Invitational. Spots are being held for those two winners if they have not already qualified, and the No. 2 golfer on the alternate list is former Wofford standout William McGirt.

The field also includes two players who starred in the 1991 Ryder Cup Matches at the Ocean Course, American Paul Azinger and Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal.
