VENICE, Fla. — Former College of Charleston women’s golfer and current Symetra Tour member Fiona Puyo fired a first-round 7-under-par 65 to take a two-stroke lead at the second stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament.
With play split between the Plantation Golf and Country Club Bobcat and Panther Courses, Puyo opened on the Panther Course where she carded eight birdies and one bogey.
The 25-year-old native of Epernay, France, recently completed her second year on the Symetra Tour.
Former College of Charleston golfer Leigh Whittaker shot 76 for her opening round of the qualifying stage.
The top 70 and ties on Friday advance into the Qualifying Tournament Stage III.The final stage will be contested over 90 holes Nov. 28-Dec. 2in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2013 LPGA membership.
The Charleston Battery has set dates for two open player trials for the 2013 season. The first session is scheduled for Nov. 30-Dec. 1, and a second trial will be held Jan. 11-12, 2013. The Battery will also host a pre-season trial camp Feb. 8-10.
The December and January trials are open to all via the application process, while the February trial players are selected by invitation only.
Players interested in applying for the trials should complete the online registration available at www.charlestonbattery.com. The cost for each trial camp is $150 and includes dinner on Friday and lunch on Saturday in the Three Lions Club.
