MOUNT PLEASANT -- The top-seeded College of Charleston men's tennis team (16-4) fell to No. 4 Elon, 4-3, in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament on Saturday.

Elon (9-13) opened the match strong as Cody MacDowell and Philip Nemec notched an impressive 8-2 decision at No. 2 doubles over sophomore John Harden and freshman Kyle Parker. Chase Helpingstine and Alberto Rojas then clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 victory over junior Lukas Koncilia and sophomore Tom Delme at the No. 1 spot.

But ultimately it came down to a deciding final singles match between the Phoenix's Alberto Rojas and the Cougars' Mickael Boyer at No. 4.

In the third set, Rojas jumped out to a 4-1 led before clinching a 6-4 victory to send the Phoenix (9-13) to the championship.

On the women's side, the top-seeded Cougars defeated No. 4 Davidson, 4-0, to secure a spot in today's championship match.

The Cougars will face either No. 2 Samford or No. 3 Furman at 2 p.m.

The Cougars (15-8) won the doubles point with 8-3 victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Holly Dowse and Emma Hayman downed Davidson's Virginia Berry and Teresa Wang at the No. 1 doubles position while Kinsey Casey and Irene Viana topped Ali Gores and Samantha Galainena at No. 3.
