GREENVILLE -- Elon coach Mike Kennedy had planned to bring back ace pitcher Kyle Webb for today’s Southern Conference championship game against The Citadel.

But Kennedy had to use his ace on Saturday night just to get to the title game, throwing Elon’s pitching plans into question for today’s 2 p.m. contest at Fluor Field.

Webb, a 6-1, 190-pound senior, started and threw 101 pitches in Elon’s 10-1 loss to Furman to start the tournament on Wednesday. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and four earned runs, walking two and striking out six.

On Saturday night, Elon turned to Webb to get the save in a 7-6 win over Georgia Southern. He only threw seven pitches to get two outs in the ninth inning, but that might have been enough to keep him out of action today against the Bulldogs.

“We planned on Webb, but since he had to come in this game, I’m not sure,” Kennedy said. “We may still use him; if not, will find somebody else.”

Third-seeded Elon (31-28) used six pitchers in beating Georgia Southern twice Saturday to reach the title game.

Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded Bulldogs (35-24) could have both midweek starter Austin Livingston (4-2, 5.09 earned-run average) and SoCon pitcher of the year Austin Pritcher (8-2, 2.61) available for duty today.

Pritcher threw 117 pitches in The Citadel’s 6-5 win over Appalachian State on Wednesday to start the tournament, and has not pitched since. Livingston has yet to pitch in the tournament.

“He’s available, but whether we use him, I don’t know,” Citadel coach Fred Jordan said of Pritcher. “He’s got a career ahead of him. We’ll sit down as a staff and figure that out. Livingston is the logical choice, but Pritcher is available. We could piggyback the rest of the staff like we do in mid-week games.”

The Citadel goes for its ninth SoCon tournament title today, and an automatic bid to the NCAA regionals. The game will be shown on ESPN3.
