Don Bosco 54, Pinewood 49
The third time wasn't the charm for Pinewood boys basketball coach Pat Eidson.
The veteran coach was denied his 700th career victory Thursday afternoon as Don Bosco Prep topped the Panthers, 54-49, in the consolation bracket of the 19th annual Piggly Wiggly Classic at North Charleston High School. It was the Panthers' third straight loss since Pinewood beat Spartanburg Christian on Dec. 17 to give Eidson his 699th victory.
The Panthers' three-game slump includes losses to Upperrom Christian (Lauderhill, Fla.) The Bullis School (Potomac, Md.) and Don Bosco (Washington, D.C.). The Panthers must beat Manning today or Eidson will have to wait until 2012 to reach the milestone. Pinewood plays Manning at 10 a.m. today in the final round of the tournament.
Eidson will become the fourth coach in state history to win 700 with his next victory. The other coaches include John Smith of Great Falls, Taft Watson of Terrell's Bay and Earl Brown of Burke.
Paul Jorgenson led Don Bosco Prep with 15 points and six rebounds. Jemal Mosley added 12 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Keith Pinckney led the Panthers with 23 points and three steals.
