HICKORY, N.C. -- Three Charleston RiverDog pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, and the offense chalked up a four-run seventh in a 5-0 win over Hickory in a South Atlantic League game at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night.
Charleston (26-24, 57-62 overall) has won four straight games for the second time this half. Hickory (26-22, 66-52) has lost four in a row for the first time this season. The shutout is the first for the Crawdads since April 19.
Mike Solbach (3-4) enjoyed his best start of the season in five scoreless innings, permitting just three hits, while walking one and striking out a pair. Ryan Acosta pitched two hitless innings, while Ryan Flannery did the same, as the RiverDogs retired the final 17 Hickory batters.
A scoreless tie lasted until the fifth inning, when Emerson Landoni led off by slapping his fourth double of the series against Hickory starter Jake Brigham, and he then scored on DeAngelo Mack's RBI single for a 1-0 advantage.
In the seventh, the RiverDogs loaded the bases without getting a base hit and ended up scoring four times to put the game out of reach. Luke Murton was hit by a pitch, Neil Medchill walked, and Kelvin Castro reached on an error. With two outs, Slade Heathcott was hit by another Brigham offering to force in Murton for a 2-0 lead. Mack followed by sneaking a two-run single into right field, upping the score to 4-0, Heathcott came home on a wild pitch from reliever Johan Yan to make it 5-0.
Brigham (3-4), who tossed a complete game, two-hitter in his last outing with a career-high 12 strikeouts, worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, one earned, on four hits, with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Charleston needed only five base hits to score five times, with two each coming from Landoni and Mack, while Mack added three RBIs for the first time since July 28.
In tonight's 7:05 opener of a home series against the Rome Braves at Riley Park, RiverDogs right-hander Sean Black (6-8, 4.08 ERA) faces Rome righty Robinson Lopez (3-7, 4.28, ERA).
