The Optimist Club of Charleston named Lauren DiNicola as its female athlete of the year.

DiNicola attends the School of the Arts and competes for Wando High School in cross country and track.

Wando's Brennan McDavid was the first runner-up. She was on the swimming team and ran track and cross country.

The Optimist volleyball all-star team includes Katie Cummings, Bishop England; Mary Crawford James, Bishop England; Litsa Darby, Ashley Hall; Caty Warren, Ashley Hall; Catherine Peeples, Wando; and Elizabeth Miler, Summerville. Franny Slay of Ashley Hall is coach of the year.

The Optimist basketball team includes Aleighsa Welch, Goose Creek; Mallory Molony, Bishop England; Emily Willoughby, Wando; Chentiah Ladson, West Ashley; and Danielle Blunt, Wando. Tim Baldwin of Goose Creek is the coach of the year.

The Optimist track team includes Brianna Blanton, Summerville; McDavid, Wando; Briauna Jones, Summerville and Leigh Anne Roberts, Wando. Summerville's Jim Kilbreth is coach of the year.

Carolina soccer

The Clash of the Carolina Soccer Matches, featuring the top seniors from South Carolina against the top seniors from North Carolina, will be held July 10 at Blackbaud Stadium.

Local players named to the South Carolina boys team include Brandon Costa and James Baldwin of Bishop England; John Parker, Beaufort; and Alex Nultey and Eric Fornell of Wando.

Kevin Heise of Brookland-Cayce and Wayne Quinlan of Hilton Head are the girls coaches.

Local players named to the South Carolina team include Bilan Williams of West Ashley, and Wando's Chloe Urig and Madeline Fellabom.

The girls coaches are David Kleinfelder of Dreher and Drew McNeely of West Ashley.

Region 7-AA baseball

Bryce Hines of champion Hanahan is Region 7-AA baseball player of the year, while the Hawks' Brian Mitchell is coach of the year.

The team includes Hines, Hunter Bessinger, Bret Hines, Evan Jordan, Nick Zerbst and Ryan Manore of Hanahan; Aaron Bishop, Zack Hagaman, Nick Franza and Dylan Lee of Waccamaw.

Timberland's selections include Brian Welch, Cody Craig and Sean Stanley.

Rounding out the team are Michael Keels of Manning and Mason Brett of Andrews.

Region 8-AAA stars

The 8-AAA coaches announced their baseball and softball all-star teams.

Region baseball champion Hilton Head's selections include Jack Tillman, Sean Bartlett, Nic Levy, Ethan Oliff and Charlie Wilkins.

Bluffton's picks include Trey Dymock, Zach Frazier and Kevin Paige.

Battery Creek's picks include Shane Dixon and Joe Fields, while Lake Marion's picks are Sheldon Bradshaw and Dustin Garcia.

Stall's Mitch Eachues and North Charleston's Travis Culbreth round out the team.

Bryant Kitty of Bluffton is coach of the year.

Region softball champ Bluffton's selections include Courtney Smith, Jessica Schouch, Summer Lawson, Melissa Peebles and Lauren Lowell.

Hilton Head's picks are Maddie Mayer, Rebekah Herty and Tori Motchan. Battery Creek's selections are Alexia Cortez, Theresa Bishop and Michaela Johnson.

The rest of the team includes Lake Marion's Alexis Mack and I'Asia Williams, and Stall's Jessica McCoy.
