John Dennis kept this two-shot lead after two rounds of the Senior Azalea Invitational golf tournament, but there was some noise behind him Thursday at the Country Club of Charleston.

Dennis posted a 2-under-par 69 and is at 7-under-par 135 heading into today’s final round of the event for players 55 and older. Rick Cloninger of Fort Mill shot an 8-under-63 and joined Jack Hall of Sea Island, Ga., in a tie for second place.

Cloninger’s 63 included nine birdies and one bogey. He birdied the first hole, bogeyed the third, and then birdied 4, 5 and 6 for a front-nine 33. He shot 30 on the back nine with birdies at 12, 14, 15, 16 and 18.

In the Super Seniors (players 65 and older), Bob Currey of Boston jumped past first-round leader Bob Rowland of Danville, Calif., shooting a second-round 69 for a 139 total. Rowland is at 141.

Forty-three regulars and 42 Super Seniors made the cut for today’s final round. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. with the leaders starting at 10:29 a.m.
