John Dennis of Greenville started his round with a bogey and finished with a bogey, but in between played stellar golf to take a two-shot lead after the opening session of the Senior Azalea golf tournament at the Country Club of Charleston.
Dennis made five birdies and an eagle on his way to a 5-under-par 66, two better than Steve Rhorer of Costa Mesa, Calif. Rhorer had three bogeys and six birdies.
Defending champion Brady Exber of Las Vegas opened with a 74 and is tied for 16th.
Bob Rowland of Danville, Calif., leads the Super Senior (65-older) division after opening with a 68. Rowland made four birdies and one bogey. Defending Super Senior champion Tommy Ford of Mount Pleasant is tied for ninth with a 72.
The tournament continues through Friday with a cut following today’s round.
