The Citadel has begun the demolition of the east-side stands at Johnson Hagood Stadium, home of Bulldogs football.
The demolition work was approved in February by the city's Board of Architectural Review and began earlier this week. There are about 9,300 seats on the east side of the stadium, which seats about 21,000.
The school is still evaluating seating plans for the 2017 season, a school spokesman said.
A study commissioned by The Citadel recommended a $9.8 million plan that would rebuild the east side with an initial 3,000 seats, new bathrooms and concessions and space for additional seating.
Johnson Hagood Stadium was built in 1948, and The Citadel purchased the stadium from the city in 1963. The Altman Athletic Center behind one end zone was opened in 2001, and the west side underwent major renovation in 2005.
Access to the east side was limited during the 2016 season due to lead-paint mitigation and other issues.
