DE Johnson, OL Douglas commit to Gamecocks

Defensive end Tyreek Johnson (6-4, 245) of Lakewood has known for months that he wanted to play college football for South Carolina, but he wanted to wait to make his commitment while on campus with his parents for an unofficial visit. That finally happened for him Saturday morning.

USC coach Will Muschamp offered Johnson back in February, giving him his first major college offer. Johnson’s only other offer at this point was from Coastal Carolina.

“It was very exciting,” Johnson said. “I was actually kind of surprised to be honest with you. I wasn’t really expecting to get an offer from a big SEC school like USC.”

Johnson said he’s looking forward to playing defense under Muschamp’s watch and learning all he can from defensive assistants Lance Thompson and Travaris Robinson.

Also on Saturday, offensive lineman Eric Douglas (6-5. 284) of Charlotte confirmed that he verbally committed to USC earlier in the week.

Douglas called Muschamp on Wednesday, but he wanted to wait until talking with him in person at Saturday’s scrimmage before publicizing his commitment.

Douglas narrowed his list to USC, Penn State, Florida, Maryland and North Carolina from over 20 offers. He recently visited Penn State and Maryland and soon after those visits he knew he wanted to spend his college days at South Carolina.

“I love everything they have to offer,” Douglas said. “It’s a great fit for me socially and football wise. Football is in the SEC and this is home, this is where I want to be.’

Douglas camped at USC last summer and quickly became a major target of offensive line coach Shawn Elliott. And Douglas said he has always liked Elliott and the way he develops and coaches his linemen.

“Their style of play is how I play,” he said. “They are lean. They get out and pass block and their nasty in run blocking.”

Douglas becomes a major part of Muschamp’s building effort at USC as the third offensive lineman to commit.

Douglas and his teammate, offensive lineman TJ Moore, have vowed to play together in college, and Douglas expects Moore to follow soon with a commitment to the Gamecocks.
