Dambaugh advances to U.S. Women’s Amateur

Ashlan Ramsey of Milledgeville, Ga., led a group of 10 golfers, including Katelyn Dambaugh of Goose Creek, who earned spots Monday in U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifying at Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Cougar Point.

Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston just missed qualifying and earned the second alternate spot. A field of 102 golfers entered the first of 18 qualifiers that will be held across the nation for next month’s U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Country Club of Charleston.

Ramsey, who will be a freshman member of Clemson’s inaugural women’s golf team, turned in a bogey-free round of 68 to earn medalist honors. Kelli Murphy of Elgin was second at 2-under-par 70. Dambaugh tied for third at 71 along with Katie Petrino of Louisville, Ky. Haley Zagoria of Atlanta shot even-par 72 to finish fifth.

There was a nine-way tie for sixth at 73, setting up a sudden-death playoff for the final five spots plus two alternate positions. Jessica Vasilic of Anaheim, Calif., Yu Liu of China, Lily Bartell of Hilton Head, Anne Marie Covar of Edgefield and Dawn Woodard of Greer made pars or better to advance, while Katherine Perry was eliminated with a double bogey. Mariana Sims of Austin, Texas, almost holed her approach shot for a tap-in birdie on the second extra hole to claim the first alternate spot, then two holes later Higgins rammed in a birdie try to win the second alternate spot.

Higgins, who just won her second consecutive Carolinas Women’s Amateur and is headed to Vanderbilt and graduate school for her final two years of eligibility, said Monday was a learning experience.

“I’m happy with my ball-striking. It was a good experience,” said Higgins, who bogeyed the final two holes of regulation to fall into the playoff.

Dambaugh, who is headed to the University of South Carolina, said her round of 71 could have been much better.

“It could have been at least four strokes better,” the 17-year-old former Pinewood Prep star said. “I think I was tired after the wind and the rain.”

Dambaugh was 3-under after eight holes but bogeyed 12 and 18 for a back-nine 38.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur will be played Aug. 5-11 at the Country Club of Charleston.
