Linzy Rother drove in five runs as Charleston Southern swept College of Charleston in a softball doubleheader at Buccaneer Field on Wednesday.
The Bucs prevailed, 5-1, in the opener. CSU rallied to win the second game, 6-3. The Bucs took advantage of five errors, which led to five unearned runs.
In the opener, CSU (27-19) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, highlighted by Rother’s two-run single off Cougars ace Stephanie Saylors (16-9). The Bucs tacked on two more in the sixth on a two-run double by Hayes Holdsworth.
Morgan Dowdy (15-10) allowed one run on four hits and a walk in seven innings while striking out seven. The lone run for the Cougars (28-18) came on a homer by Mackenzie Maples in the fourth.
In the second game, the Cougars’ Lizzy Vaughn and Kelsey Hodgson homered and Amanda Lonergan had an RBI single for a 3-2 lead.
But Rother snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth with a two-run homer. CSU added one more run for the final margin. Jen Giles (9-8) earned the win in relief.
The Bucs are at Gardner-Webb next in a doubleheader Saturday. The Cougars host UNC Greensboro in a doubleheader Saturday.
Charleston Southern’s Olga Makhova earned a spot on the Big South All-Conference singles team for a fourth straight season, and Alexandra Walters took home a pair of honors at the league’s awards ceremony in Asheville, N.C.
Walters earned the Big South’s 5th flight title and a spot on the Big South All-Academic team.
CSU is the No. 2 seed in the Big South women’s tennis championship and opens tournament play today with a 1:30 p.m. quarterfinal match against No. 7 seed Campbell.
