CSU’s Jean qualifies for NCAAs

Charleston Southern sophomore Meme Jean ran a 13.25 to break the school and Big South Conference record in the 100-meter hurdles to qualify for the NCAA Championships on Saturday night at the East Regional meet.

Jean advances to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., beginning on June 5.

Jean finished second in her heat and eighth in qualifying to reach the NCAA championships. The sophomore and two-time Big South champion broke her own school and Big South record in the event three times this season, including twice at this week’s regional.

Jean advanced to the final heat with a 13.30 time on Friday night.

Clemson’s Brianna Rollins and Kendra Harrison were the top two finishers in qualifying. Rollins ran a 12.72 to lead the way for the 12 national qualifiers.

For South Carolina, seniors Kierre Beckles and Breanna Radford earned individual bids on Saturday, and the women’s 4x100-meter relay also qualified. Six Gamecocks qualified during Friday’s second day of competition.

Austin Cody and Mike Cobb are tied for the lead after the second round of the Miler Invitational in Summerville.

Cody and Cobb shot identical 67s on Saturday to soar into the lead at 139. Bill Smunk and Jeff Traylor are tied for second at 141. The event concludes today.
