Chase Shelton hit his first career homer and Jaren Sustar drove in two runs as Charleston Southern defeated rival The Citadel, 5-2, in baseball Wednesday at CSU Ballpark.
Five CSU pitchers combined to allow 10 hits, but limited the damage to two runs while striking out six. Corey Deighan worked out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth for his third save, while Zach Hagaman (2-0) threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for the Buccaneers (10-20). Starter Austin Weekley allowed two runs in four innings, striking out three.
Brett Tompkins (0-2) took the loss in relief of Bryce Hines, who struck out eight in five innings but allowed two runs on three hits and five walks.
The Citadel (12-17) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Drew DeKerlegand RBI double followed by a Hughston Armstrong RBI single.
CSU knotted the score in the fifth on a two-run double by Sustar, which scored Thomas Levander and Harrison Wilkins.
The Buccaneers took the lead for good the next inning as Shelton hit a blast to right center to make it 3-2. Brian Welch added an RBI single to make it 4-2.
Alex Tomasovich drove in Bobby Ison in the seventh to give the Bucs a three-run cushion.
In the ninth, the Bulldogs mounted a rally as Johnathan Stokes singled and Hayden Hendry walked. Nick Orvin’s single with two outs loaded the bases before Deighan coaxed a groundout by Mason Davis to seal the victory.
The Buccaneers are next at UNC Asheville at 3 p.m. Friday. The Citadel is next at Samford on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
