CONWAY -- No. 5 seed Charleston Southern dropped its opening game in the Big South softball tournament, falling to No. 4 Gardner-Webb, 8-3, on Thursday at Coastal Carolina Softball Field.
The Buccaneers scored first in the game, but later committed three errors, resulting in five unearned runs for the Bulldogs. CSU (29-27-1) goes to the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament and plays today at 9 a.m. against No. 7 Presbyterian (21-27), which lost to No. 2 Liberty, 2-0.
Megan Hall paced the Bucs' offense with two hits and two runs scored. Shayla Cullum also had an RBI hit, while Trea Steele added a hit and a run scored.
The Bulldogs' Christine Murray picked up the win to improve to 11-14 after allowing six hits and three earned runs in five innings of work. Sondra Vetter (9-16) took the loss, surrendering 11 hits and three earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.
