NINETY SIX — Charleston Southern men’s golf coach Michael Wilson was named the Big South men’s golf coach of the year, and the Bucs finished third at the conference tournament on Wednesday at the Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor.
The Buccaneers shot 285-279-295 for a 5-under 859 in the tournament that was delayed two hours by rain, finishing 15 shots behind champion Liberty (280-275-289—844). Coastal Carolina was third at 854.
Charleston Southern’s Jacobo Pastor finished third overall, shooting 72-69-69 for a 6-under 210, four shots behind Liberty’s Robert Karlsson, who also won in 2010.
Pastor made the Big South All-Conference team along with Ross Thomson (69-70-74—213), who finished sixth, and David Denlinger (72-69-74—215), who finished 10th. Denlinger had previously been named to the 2012 All-Academic team.
“I’m really proud of the way the guys competed today,” said Wilson. “Particularly in tough conditions. They played hard. It’s great to see both Ross and Jacobo honored again for their efforts, as well as David for his work both on and off the course. This is the best scoring year in CSU history, so I’m very pleased with the adjustments they’ve made and the work they’ve put in. I’m both honored and thankful to be named the coach of the year, because I know there are a lot of great coaches in our league.”
Will Pieper took 25th for Charleston Southern at 73-71-79-223, while Choo Teck Ng shot 72-76-78-226 to finish 30th.
