TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --Charleston Southern scored five runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 5-5, but lightning in the area caused Tuesday's series opener with sixth-ranked Florida State (28-9) to be cancelled.
CSU (16-23) recorded the first two outs in the bottom half of the third before lightning began to near the field, causing the umpires to initially delay the game before finally calling it off completely.
The second game of this midweek series is set for 6 p.m. today at Dick Howser Stadium.
COLUMBIA -- South Carolina junior reliever Jose Mata hurled 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to pick up his third win of the year and freshman right-hander Ethan Carter pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second save as South Carolina defeated USC Upstate, 4-2, at Carolina Stadium.
South Carolina (29-8) and USC Upstate (13-29) each finished with seven hits. Jackie Bradley went 2 for 4 and Nick Ebert was 2 for 3 for the Gamecocks
USC will open a three-game SEC series at Georgia on Friday.
