HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- The College of Charleston was in first place, six strokes ahead of UNC Greensboro and Chattanooga, at the Southern Conference women's golf championship Sunday. The Cougars fired a 300 in the opening round at Moss Creek Golf Club. Charleston's Leigh Whittaker is second with a 73, four shots back.
-- Coy Breen fired an even-par 72, tying for 11th, to lead the College of Charleston men to eighth after the first round of the SoCon men's championship at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. Furman leads at 280. The Cougars are at 297.
Host College of Charleston went 14-1 to win the SAISA team race championship. The Cougars, along with second-place Eckerd (11-4), qualified for the nationals set May 29-31 in Madison, Wis. Charleston’s skippers were Zeke Horowitz, Juan Maegli and Jackson Benvenutti.
Top-seeded Charleston Southern starts play in the Big South Conference women's tournament at 9 a.m. Friday in Radford, Va. The Buccaneers will face the winner of Thursday's opening-round match between UNC Asheville and Radford.
