ROCK HILL -- The College of Charleston split two volleyball matches to cap its play in the Carolina Challenge, beating South Carolina, 3-2, before bowing to Clemson, 3-2, on Saturday.
The Cougars (5-2) beat USC, 24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 16-14, their first win against the Gamecocks since a 3-1 win in Columbia in November 2006.
Clemson (6-0) defeated the Cougars, 17-25, 26-24, 25-15, 19-25, 15-13.
Against the Gamecocks (0-8), Whitney Russell led the Cougars with 29 kills, marking her career high.
--Tournament host Mercer posted a 3-0 win over The Citadel in Macon, Ga. The Bears won 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 over the Bulldogs, led by Tatum Jestila, who was named to the all-tournament team.

Jarod Walker and Justin Mitchel had rushing TDs and Marcus Campbell scored on a 70-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter as Garrett Tech (3-0) rallied to a 20-16 road win over St. John's (0-2) on Friday.
