Cougs to honor Emanuel AME during opener

College of Charleston athletics will honor the Emanuel AME Church community during the men’s and women’s basketball teams’ home opener on Friday at TD Arena.

The C of C women will play Houston in the first game of the doubleheader at 4 p.m., and the men will face South Carolina State in the nightcap at 7 p.m. Both teams will hold a moment of silence prior to tipoff in remembrance of the victims, survivors and members of Mother Emanuel AME Church.

Prior to the men’s game, Vanessa Thomas-Jackson, a member of the Emanuel AME choir, will sing the national anthem.

The women’s team will wear a blue patch embroidered with the state Palmetto Tree and nine doves on their jerseys for the entire season, while the men’s basketball team will host a silent auction of “We Are All Charleston” game-worn, numbered warmup shirts on the concourse of TD Arena beginning at 4 p.m. during the women’s game. All proceeds will benefit Emanuel AME youth groups.

College of Charleston’s Melissa Morello earned CAA offensive player of the week honors after tallying 37 kills and 19 digs in the team’s two matches last week.

The senior posted a career-high 26 kills against William & Mary on Saturday to go along with 15 digs and six blocks. It was her 53rd career double-double and a CAA-leading 19th of the season.

Morello leads the conference and is 21st nationally with 395 kills this season.

Freshman Allison Beckman totaled 92 assists, 20 digs, three service aces and three blocks and was named CAA rookie of the week for her efforts.
