MOUNT PLEASANT -- The College of Charleston women's tennis team (20-9) captured the Southern Conference crown Sunday with a 4-0 championship victory over Furman.
Emma Hayman defeated freshman Lauren Kline 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Kinsey Casey beat freshman Michele Stanford 6-2, 6-0 in the fourth singles match.
Laura Borza defeated sophomore Susan Bitetti 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles match, and Keely Mulligan beat junior Jennifer Betts 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
UNC Greensboro defeated Elon, 4-3, for the men's title.
The College of Charleston sailing team competed in three events over the weekend, placing second at each event.
At the SAISA Women's Championship in St. Petersburg, Fla., Charleston won five of 20 races to post 39 points, edged by Eckerd.
In the Admiral's Cup, the Cougs won 12 races and placed in the top five in 17 others for 333 points, in Kings Point, N.Y.
At the Thompson Trophy Regatta in New London, Conn., they scored 172 points, including three wins and 18 top fives.
Second baseman Amber Shiff-lett went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs, but the College of Charleston (21-22, 8-9 SoCon) fell just short, 10-9, in the finale of a series against Georgia Southern (24-23, 9-8) in Statesboro, Ga.
--Jana Matthews hit for the cycle, going 4 for 4 with six RBIs, to lead Charleston Southern (25-26-1, 8-10 Big South) to a 16-5 victory over Gardner-Webb (17-29, 7-10).
