MOUNT PLEASANT — The College of Charleston softball team remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Elon at Patriots Point on Saturday. The Cougars used 22 hits and three home runs to get past the Phoenix, 7-3 and 4-3.
Kristy Giragosian hit her second career grand slam to give Charleston (13-9, 5-0) a comfortable lead in the opener.
The Cougars had to battle from behind in Game 2 and freshman Rebecca Mueller provided the heroics with a walk-off RBI single in the seventh inning.
Hope Klicker and Stephanie Saylors both threw complete games and earned the victories for the Cougars. Klicker struck out eight and only allowed one earned run in the first game, and Saylors didn’t surrender any earned runs in her outing.
Kelsey Hodgson was good for four hits on the day and hit a two-run homer in Game 1. Lizzy Vaughn hit her first home run of the season in Game 2.
Longwood slugged six home runs as the Lancers (18-7, 4-1) swept both games of the doubleheader, winning 9-3 and 8-0 over host Charleston Southern (5-21, 0-2) in the Buccaneers’ Big South season opener.
Jana Matthews made the day one to remember for CSU, slugging her 28th career home run to lead off the sixth inning in the first game, surpassing former teammate Megan Lombard (2009-12) as the Buccaneers’ all-time home run leader.
