STATESBORO, Ga. -- The College of Charleston (33-20) lost, 7-5, to Elon (30-22) in the opening round of the Southern Conference softball championship on Wednesday.
The Cougars sparked a three-run rally in the seventh, putting the tying run at second base, but ultimately fell short. Starter Alexa Datko took the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings. Carly Corthell went 1 for 3 with two RBIs for the Cougars, and Hillary Stringer er scored two runs.
The fourth-seeded Cougars land in the losers' bracket of the double elimination tournament and face Furman at 10 a.m. today. The Paladins won their first game, a 5-4 single-elimination win over Western Carolina, on Wednesday before losing to top-seeded Chattanooga, 4-0, later in the day.
--Junior shortstop Megan Lombard made the first team to highlight five Charleston Southern players picked on the Big South all-conference teams.
Senior catcher Erin Kegley earned a spot on the second team along with fellow Buccaneers in sophomore third baseman Jessica Brock, sophomore outfielder Jana Matthews and freshman designated player Stephanie Sbardella. Kegley also made the league's all-academic team.
