Cougs face road-heavy schedule

College of Charleston

The College of Charleston men's basketball team will have to keep its suitcases packed during the 2010-11 season. Eighteen of the Cougars' 31 games will be on the road, and the schedule includes three Atlantic Coast Conference teams and one Southeastern Conference opponent.

The Cougars play at Maryland on Nov. 10, at North Carolina Nov. 28, play host to Clemson on Dec. 22 and travel to Tennessee on Dec. 31. Charleston also will be the home team in an ESPNU BracketBusters game either Feb. 18 or 19.

College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins said the team's tough out-of-conference schedule will be helpful for the team's RPI ranking. Six teams on this year's schedule were in the NCAA Tournament last season -- Wofford, Winthrop, Clemson, Maryland and East Tennessee State. Another three participated in the NIT -- North Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Rhode Island.

"Scheduling at a mid-Division I school is hard," Cremins said. "I wish we played a few more home games. We play a very difficult schedule. If I was a young coach just starting off, I probably wouldn't play this schedule.

"Everybody knows how I feel. The most important games for me are the SoCon games. That's our No. 1 priority."

Charleston finished 22-12 last season, finished second in the Southern Conference South Division and played in the CollegeBasketballInvitational.com tournament for the second straight year, beating Eastern Kentucky and losing to Virginia Commonwealth.

Charleston opens Nov. 5 with an exhibition game at home against Francis Marion.
