With both teams coming off weekend sweeps in Southern Conference baseball, College of Charleston and The Citadel will meet at 6 tonight in a non-conference game at Riley Park. The Bulldogs swept three games from Furman over the weekend to improve to 26-13 overall and 14-1 in the SoCon, good for first place with a three-game lead over Samford at the halfway point of the conference race.
College of Charleston (27-11) took three games from Wofford over the weekend and is 12-6 in the SoCon, tied for third with Georgia Southern.
Freshman right-hander Austin Pritcher (2-2, 4.97 ERA) is slated to start for The Citadel, facing College of Charleston junior right-hander Josh Salay (0-3, 7.96 ERA).
The two teams will meet in a three-game SoCon series May 7-9 at College of Charleston. The Citadel won three of four from the Cougars last season.
Players of the week
The College of Charleston's Matt Leeds, who batted .566 in four games, was named the SoCon player of the week.
Leeds was 10 for 18 with three home runs, three doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs. Leeds had at least two hits in all four games last week and reached the five-RBI plateau in two games. The Cougars' three wins all came against conference foe Wofford. Leeds drove in 13 of the Cougars 38 runs (34.2%) for the week and only struck out twice in 18 at-bats.
--South Carolina's Blake Cooper was named SEC pitcher of the week. The right-hander tossed a complete game shutout with a four-hitter in the 5-0 win against Mississippi on Friday. He is only the second SEC pitcher to record a complete game shutout this year and the first this season to do it in SEC play.He struck out a career-high 10 batters in the victory, his fifth complete game of his career but his first career complete game shutout.
