Charleston Southern salvaged a split with visiting College of Charleston on Tuesday in softball as the Buccaneers fell 2-1 in the first game but won 6-4 in the nightcap behind a two-run home run by Jana Matthews.

The Cougars (15-12) got a season-high 12 strikeouts in a complete game from Hope Klicker (9-5) in the opener. Carly Corthell had an RBI single, while Allison Pedigo drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh.

Stephanie Sbardella had a solo homer for CSU (6-26).

In the second game, CSU snapped a 10-game losing skid. Linzy Rother (3-7) got the win while getting two hits and two RBIs. Jennifer Giles got the save. Hayes Holdsworth was 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Rebecca Mueller was 3 for 4 with an RBI for the Cougars.

The Charleston Battery defeated Coastal Carolina, 2-0, in a preseason scrimmage behind goals from Jose Cuevas and Taylor Mueller.

The Battery finishes its preseason schedule Saturday at Blackbaud Stadium at 2:30 p.m. against the Carolina RailHawks. Admission is free.

Charleston Southern’s baseball games with The Citadel that were rained out last weekend will be at Riley Park on April 23 at 3 p.m. and at CSU Ballpark on May 14 at 6 p.m.

College of Charleston’s Christin Newman was named Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week.

Newman went a combined 8-0 in singles and doubles as the Cougars went 4-2 with wins over Albany, UMBC, Davidson and Appalachian State.

Newman ran her record to 12-5 with five victories at No. 1 singles last week, with all coming in straight sets. Newman also went 3-0 in doubles play and competed in two other matches that were unfinished.
