The State Ports Authority plans to move the first of two giant container cranes from Columbus Street Terminal on the Charleston peninsula to Wando Welch Terminal in Mount Pleasant on Saturday afternoon.
The 1,500-ton crane, one of the tallest structures in downtown Charleston, will be transported across the harbor and under the Cooper River bridge at low tide, around 4:30 p.m., in order to maximize the amount of clearance under the bridge.
Even then, the crane will clear the bridge by only about 15 feet.
The crane would be off-loaded at the Wando terminal Sunday, at high tide. The second crane move has not been scheduled.
