PINEHURST, N.C. -- The College of Charleston women's golf team shot the low round for the tournament with a 298 en route to winning the Pinehurst Challenge on Tuesday.
Junior Leigh Whittaker earned medalist honors as she fired a one-under for the final round and finished with a three-over 219 for the tournament, winning by eight strokes.
Whittaker was not the only Cougar in the top 10 as sophomore Kathy Boehm earned runner-up honors as she tied for second with an 11-over 227. Fellow sophomore Ainhoa Nogales tied for sixth with a 232.
The Citadel, led by junior Bree Baumgartner, carded a final-round 334 to finish in 13th place (+156).
The Charleston Battery lost, 1-0, to the Puerto Rico Islanders in its final preseason match at Blackbaud Stadium.
Forward Matt Bouraee scored the lone goal in the 77th minute, slotting past Keith Wiggans from just inside the penalty area.
The Battery almost levelled in stoppage time after the ball was played to the back post from a free kick. Substitute defender Sean Flatley met the cross but his header flashed wide of the far post.
The Battery opens its season on Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. match against the Charlotte Eagles.
The South Carolina offense came to life as the Gamecocks took home a 12-4 victory in five innings over Charleston Southern at Beckham Field.
Sophomore shortstop Samie Garcia led the Gamecocks (18-18), getting three of the club's 10 hits in the contest, posting a double and three RBIs to go with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
