Cougars win volleyball tourney

ATLANTA — College of Charleston silenced the Georgia Tech faithful in a 3-0 sweep of the ACC squad on its home court, winning the Georgia Tech Invitational title on Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars (3-0) never trailed against Georgia Tech (2-1), winning 25-22, 25-19, 25-15.

The win marked the Cougars’ fifth win on an ACC home court. Junior Sloane White earned tournament MVP honors after tallying 30 kills in three matches for a .291 hitting percentage. Darcy Dorton and Cara Howley were both named to the all-tournament team.

Dorton led the Cougars on Sunday with 11 kills, while White had nine. Emily Neideffer had six blocks, Andi Zbojniewicz had seven digs and Cara Howley three aces.

College of Charleston hosts Charleston Southern at 7 p.m. Tuesday at TD Arena.

College of Charleston closed the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic with a 1-0 win over Xavier in Mount Pleasant. All-tournament selection Xavier Rajpaul scored in the 13th minute for the only score.

Goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk had three first-half saves for the Cougars (1-1), but missed the second half with a back injury suffered in a collision. Alex Young helped complete the shutout.

McGowan, Connor Coons and Rajpaul were named to the all-tournament team.

The Cougars are next at Furman at 7 p.m. Saturday as part of the Furman Diadora/Spinx Tournament.

Mariana Garcia drilled a shot into the top of the net with 54 seconds remaining in regulation, and neither team scored in the two overtime periods as The Citadel and Canisius played to a 1-1 tie at WLI Field.

The Bulldogs (1-2-1) had trailed since the final minute of the first half before Garcia took a pass from Jillian Meyer, dribbled through the Canisius (1-3-1) defense and fired a bullet over the head of goalkeeper Megan Tock.

The Bulldogs host Charleston Southern next Sunday at 2 p.m.

Anna Sells made her first collegiate goal count, putting in the go-ahead score in the 80th minute and adding an insurance goal six minutes later, as the Buccaneers (3-0) beat Jacksonville State, 4-2.

Toni Lashley and Chelsea Frankeny scored, while Sells also had an assist.

In Chicago, College of Charleston’s Jade Reynolds scored in the 89th minute, but it wasn’t enough as DePaul used late scoring to get past the Cougars, 3-1, at Wish Field.

DePaul (3-1) scored twice in the last 10 minutes.

The Cougars (1-3) next host the four-team Charleston Cup starting Friday in Mount Pleasant. College of Charleston faces VCU at 7:30 p.m.
