BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- The College of Charleston completed its regular season softball campaign with a 4-2 bounce-back road win over Samford on Friday.
After dropping Thursday's doubleheader to the Bulldogs, the Cougars (33-19, 12-11) regrouped to preserve their .500-plus Southern Conference record and enhance their potential seeding leading into next week's Southern Conference Championships at Georgia Southern.
Stephanie Saylors went the distance for the win, and the Cougars pitcher limited the Bulldogs to just two hits and one earned run while striking out three. The Cougars outhit the Bulldogs by a 7-2 margin, led by Kristi Woodall's 2-for-2 outing with two RBIs by way of a fourth-inning home run. Robyn Harmon also homered for the Cougars.
Leigh Whittaker improved on her first-round score of 79 as she fired a 76 in round two at the NCAA women's East Regional at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Whittaker has a two-round score of 155 (+11).
The individual leader in the regional is Alabama's Stephanie Meadow at 138. The final round of the tournament is today.
American Legion tryouts
The American Legion baseball teams in Goose Creek and West Ashley will hold tryouts next week.
Goose Creek's tryouts are scheduled for Tuesday-Thursday at Goose Creek High School from 5-7:30 p.m. each day. Call Jimmy Huskey for more information at (843) 553-5300.
