GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The College of Charleston was tied for 17th place and Charleston Southern was 23rd in the 24-team women's golf field after Thursday's first round of the NCAA East Regional.

The Cougars shot a 9-over 297 at Ironwood Golf and Country Club, and the Buccaneers posted a 315. Auburn leads at 280 in the 54-hole tournament, followed by Pepperdine (281) and South Carolina and Tennessee, who shared third at 5-under-par 283.

The Cougars' Vanessa Koechli carded an even-par 72 and is tied for 30th in the individual standings. Teammates Katharina Boehm and Leigh Whittaker each shot 74.

CSU's Katrin Rumpf was tied for 81st after shooting a 76. Next for the Bucs were Amanda D'Ostroph (77) and Big South Conference tournament medalist Olivia Jordan-Higgins (79).

East Tennessee State's Nina Muehl shot an 8-under 64 for a three-shot lead in the medalist standings. USC's Katie Burnett was in a three-way tie for second after shooting 67.

Also, Furman (305) was in a three-way tie for 20th, and Coastal Carolina (307) was 22nd.

The top eight teams advance to the nationals, set for for May 18-21 at Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.

The teams tied for eighth after Thursday's play were at 3-under 285.
