The Colonial Athletic Association has notified Southern Conference commissioner John Iamarino that it will be contacting SoCon members to gauge their interest in joining the CAA.
CAA commissioner Tom Yeager called Iamarino last week with the news, ESPN.com reported Monday. SoCon members College of Charleston and Davidson are widely believed to be the CAA’s top targets.
As The Post and Courier reported last week, the CAA is seeking to replace Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion and Georgia State after they bolted to various leagues, and SoCon schools are obvious targets.
“(The CAA) is such a Southern league, I think they have to replace them with Southern teams,” Delaware coach Monte Ross told ESPN.com. “I think they have to have that Southern flavor that the league is known for, Davidson is a quality name and program.”
The SoCon’s annual meetings are set for May 29-June 1 in Asheville.
“I suspect 85 to 90 percent of the issues will be centered around realignment issues,” Iamarino said.
