College of Charleston’s Rainey qualifies for U.S. Amateur

College of Charleston rising junior William Rainey shared medalist honors in sectional qualifying at Monroe Country Club for the U.S. Amateur that will be played Aug. 17-23 at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

Rainey, who earlier this summer won the Rice Planters Amateur, and Victor Wiggins of Gastonia shot two-round totals of 138. Maverick Antcliff of Augusta, the 2013 Rice Planters winner, earned the third spot in a playoff with a score of 139. Charleston Southern’s Jarrett Swan of Mount Pleasant was first alternate, also shooting 139.

Rainey is the second College of Charleston golfer to earn a U.S. Amateur spot. Rising senior Josh Lorenzetti was second in a qualifying tournament held at Columbia Country Club.
