COLUMBIA — South Carolina’s baseball team finished off a three-game weekend sweep of Virginia Military Institute in its first series of the season thanks to strong showings by pitchers.

The Gamecocks’ arms combined for 36 strikeouts, four walks and a 1.33 earned-run average. VMI’s batting average for the weekend was just .121. The Keydets had 11 hits and just one extra base hit.

USC is back in action this weekend, at home against Elon. The three-game series begins Friday at 3 p.m. at Carolina Stadium.
