College of Charleston claims SoCon women’s tennis title

MOUNT PLEASANT - The College of Charleston women’s tennis team won its fourth consecutive Southern Conference Tennis Tournament with a 4-0 victory over UNC Greensboro today at the College of Charleston Tennis Center.

The Cougars (25-5) earned a berth in the NCAA tournament, as well.

College of Charleston began the match by winning the doubles point. Samantha Maddox and Irene Viana beat Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty 8-1, while Christin Newman and Katie Lee topped Annette Rios and Kayla Gammie 8-4.

Jenny Falcone posted a straight sets victory over Lucy Dougherty at No. 5 singles (6-3, 7-6) to push the Cougars ahead 2-0. Kelly Kambourelis, who was named the Most Outstanding Player, topped Alex Whitehead 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead in the match. Katie Lee then downed Stephanie Falcon 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to seal the match for the Cougars.
