College of Charleston 13-9, Appalachian State 1-1
BOONE, N.C. -- Sophomore LF Jose Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored as College of Charleston scored 12 runs over the final six innings in a 13-1 victory over Appalachian State in the opener of a Southern Conference doubleheader at Smith Stadium.
The Cougars scored nine runs in the first two innings of Game 2 to complete the sweep of the Mountaineers with a 9-1 victory in seven innings. Charleston (39-14, 22-8) wrapped up the SoCon regular season with its best conference record since 2005.
Charleston jumped out to a 13-0 lead in before Appalachian State avoid the shutout with a harmless run in the ninth. The Cougars opened the onslaught with a leadoff home run to left by Rodriguez, his 13th of the season. Rodriguez's second homer of the game built a 6-0 lead in the fifth. Joey Bergman homered in the sixth for a 7-0 advantage.
Senior Kevin Decker improved to 7-0 with the win in Game 1.
In the late game, the Cougars roared out to a 5-0 lead, before freshman starter Christian Powell even took the mound. Rodriguez lined an RBI single up the middle keyed the big inning.
Powell picked up his sixth win of the season, tossing five innings and allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
The Cougars return to action with a non-conference game at No. 6 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday.
