CLEMSON -- Tyler Kirkpatrick's grand slam in the seventh inning lifted Western Carolina (22-9-1) to a 7-5 win over Clemson (23-11) at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Wednesday night.
Clemson took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on John Hinson's two-run homer, then Wilson Boyd broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run single in the fifth inning. But the Catamounts loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh before and Kirkpatrick's go-ahead slam.
Andrew Chilcoat (1-0), the fourth of six WCU pitchers, earned the win by pitching a perfect sixth inning. Tigers reliever Mike Kent (1-1) suffered the loss.
Boyd had a double and two hits, two RBIs and a walk for the Tigers.
