GULF SHORES, Ala. — College of Charleston sand volleyball’s top pairing of Melissa Morello and Catey Warren closed out a strong season on Saturday, splitting matches with Pac 12 powers UCLA and Arizona at the AVCA National Championships.
Highlighting the day for the College was the Cougars’ hard-fought victory over UCLA’s top duo of Zoe Nightingale and Kamila Tan. After dropping the opening set, the Cougar pairing bounced back to win the second frame, 21-19. Then, in a back-and-forth third set, the Cougars continued eventually taking the decider 15-13 to claim their first victory at this year’s national championship event.
Rounding out the day, Morello and Warren then fell in straight sets to Arizona, 13-21, 14-21, to finish fourth overall in Pool B, just short of a place in the tournament’s knock-out stages.
The College of Charleston fell to Hofstra, 11-5, in its season finale on Senior Day at Patriots Point on Saturday.
Mackenzie Maples went 1-3 with a triple and two runs scored, and Allison Pedigo had a pair of singles.
The Cougars finished their 2015 campaign with a 24-29 overall record while going 8-13 in their second full season in the Colonial Athletic Association.
College of Charleston track and field standouts Julisa Tindall and Tiffany Sisk claimed impressive individual event victories on Saturday to round out the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Helping the Cougars to a seventh-place overall finish among eight teams, it was Tindall and Sisk who highlighted the College’s efforts with wins in the high jump and shot put, respectively. Tindall’s big day markedthe sophomore’s first career conference title, while for Sisk — one of the best throwers in program history — the victory is the Easley native’s third career conference crown.
Also standing out for the Cougars was the performance of senior RoShani Glover, who finished second in the triple jump with a final mark of 12.06 meters.
