CLEMSON - Sophomore left-hander Zack Erwin tossed a six-hit shutout to lead Clemson over James Madison on Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Tigers (26-19) took a 1-0 lead in the two-game series against the Dukes (15-27).
Erwin (4-2) earned the win by striking out four against no walks in a career-long nine innings pitched, as he threw only 102 pitches. Duke starter Chris Huffman (4-6) suffered the loss in a short outing due to injury.
Garrett Boulware's two-out single in the first inning scored Steven Duggar and Clemson added two runs in the third inning on Tyler Krieger's run-scoring single and Steve Wilkerson's sacrifice fly. Clemson scored its fourth run on Krieger's RBI groundout in the fifth inning, and the Tigers added four runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by Chris Okey's two-run double.
James Madison faces UNLV on Saturday at noon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The two-game series between Clemson and James Madison concludes Saturday at 4 p.m.
