CLEMSON - Clemson men’s basketball has filled its assistant coaching vacancy with Virginia Tech assistant James Johnson, a source confirmed Friday afternoon.

Johnson was the top assistant for Hokies coach Seth Greenberg and is regarded as an excellent recruiter.

Greenberg declined to comment on the reports when reached by the Post and Courier on Friday. Clemson has not yet planned an official announcement.

Johnson spent one year one as an assistant at the College of Charleston in 2003.

Johnson was on the George Mason staff when the program advanced to the Final Four in 2006.

Clemson had a position to fill on its staff after associate head coach Rick Ray left to become the head coach at Mississippi State earlier this month.

Clemson coach Brad Brownell also considered College of Charleston Mark Byington for the position.
