Behind by five runs and down to its last out, The Citadel baseball team scored six runs in the ninth inning for an improbable 8-7 victory over UNC Greensboro today at Riley Park.
The win, cemented by Jonathan Stokes’ game-winning single, capped a three-game sweep for The Citadel, its first in Southern Conference play in more than a year. The Bulldogs (16-21, 7-8) moved up to seventh place in the SoCon and took a big step toward securing a berth in the eight-team league tournament.
UNC Greensboro (18-16, 4-11) boosted the Bulldogs’ rally with three walks and two errors in the ninth as the Bulldogs sent nine batters to the plate with two out. Ryne Hardwick doubled, Nick Orvin singled and Mason Davis doubled to start the comeback before a walk, an error, two more walks and another error tied the score at 7-7.
That brought Stokes to the plate, and he lofted a fly ball over the head of Zach Leach, playing shallow in left field. Pinch-runner Hayden Hendry raced home with the winning run, setting off a wild celebration.
Orvin had three hits and the Bulldogs’ sixth pitcher, Bryce Hines, got the win to improve to 1-3. The Citadel is at Winthrop on Tuesday before a SoCon series at College of Charleston next weekend.
